Elf Hill Tapestry 127×95 cm

Hill of the elves – Elf Hill – inspired by the ancient legend of the elves. Elves were beings that lived in mounds, hills and moors and under elder trees. The tales of elves are numerous, and the legends were probably widely believed in Denmark and Sweden.

The elves lived in communities, that reflected human society with a king of the elves, laws, and traditions. The elves had hollow backs, but en face the women were unbelievably beautiful and seductive. There are a great many stories about elf women, who tried to seduce men. If the men swallowed the bait, they would immediately go mad.

Hans Christian Andersen wrote the fairy tale, Elf Hill, and Johan Ludvig Heiberg wrote the national play of Denmark, Elf Hill, in 1828 with music by Friedrich Kuhlau. One of the countless productions of Elf Hill in the Royal Theater in Copenhagen inspired me for this and other tapestries of mine.

MARCH 2017 – BIRGITTA HALLBERG – Elverhøj gobelin 127×95 cm.  (Danish translation)
