EUROPEAN TAPESTRY FORUM MASTER CLASS
with HELENA HERNMARCK
MAY 9 to 19, 2009

Kunstnerhuset Skaerbaek Fritidscenter, Skaerbeck, Denmark

Helena Hernmarck, the internationally-renowned tapestry artist, will teach a Master Class in Woven Tapestry and Free Rosengang.
The Master Class will be held in the historic centre for woven tapestry in Skaerbeck, Denmark,
from May 9-19, 2009.

Skaerbeck, was known for producing Jugendstijl/Art Nouveau tapestries from 1896-1919, and is located on the beautiful south west coast of Jutland.

Participants will stay in small, well-equipped Cabins in groups of 4, sharing double bedrooms with separate beds (see www.kursus-fritidscenter.dk). The Master Class will take place in the "artist-house", and will among other events include talks, slide shows and sight-seeing in the region.

Helena Hernmarck was born and educated in Sweden, and since 1975 has been working in the U.S. She is famous for her architectural-scale tapestries, and for working with architects such as I. M. Pei, Philip Johnson and many others. She has exhibited widely in the US and Europe. Her work is represented in the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Museum of American Art, and through numerous public and private commissions.

She is known for her adaptation of traditional Rosengang technique, creating monumental, often photo-realistic tapestries. More recently, she has also begun working on a more intimate scale, using her own watercolours and collage techniques.

Helena Hernmark describes her Course plan as follows:
"We will first learn the steps to create illusion of depth by weaving a small sample to study how light and shadow fall on a form. We will work with multihued, thick butterflies and the result will seem impressionistic rather than digital.

In a second study, we will practice mixing hues of yarn to match colours and to double-layer the techniques to translate the design into a tapestry. Eventually the intention is to see the final woven image abstract close up and figurative at a distance.

Demonstrations, designs, studies and slides (or power point presentations) will help illustrate how it is done."

The price for Master Class incl food and lodging will be 670 Euro.

SELECTION PROCESS COMPLETED FOR ARTAPESTRY 2

Over a period of three days, a carefully-selected jury of international experts in tapestry convened at Gammel Dok, a beautiful waterside arts complex in Copenhagen, Denmark.

They viewed slides of work by 89 artists from countries as far apart as Scotland, Greece and the Czech Republic, and after long discussion, selected forty-four works by a total of thirty-three artists from fourteen countries.

The feedback from the jury at the end of the process was that they had worked well together and found the selection a positive experience.

“The Steering Committee of European Tapestry Forum is very pleased with the selection for ARTAPESTRY 2. Our professional jury represented the breadth of approaches to tapestry across Europe, and was chosen with geographical diversity in mind as well”, a spokesperson for the Steering Committee said. “We are confident that ARTAPESTRY 2 will build on the strong foundations established in our initial exhibition, ARTAPESTRY, which toured Denmark, Germany and France from 2005-2007. We are currently booking the venues for the second exhibition, and have confirmed the exhibition launch at Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum in Aalborg, Denmark, from 7th November this year. It will then be shown at the West Norway Museum of Decorative Arts in Bergen. Three additional venues are currently under discussion.”

The jurors were:

Dr. Edit Andras, Art Historian, Hungary

Prof. Wlodzimierz Cygan, Tapestry artist, Poland

Annika Ekdahl, Tapestry artist, Sweden

Fiona Mathison, Tapestry artist, Scotland

Bernard Schotter, Managing Director of Les Gobelins de Beauvais et des Savonnerie, France
